CHEROKEE HOTEL PROJECT

Team 1 Concept: Train Travel; Members: Coleen O'Leary, Julia McClintic, Brooke Cunningham

One of Cleveland’s most significant landmarks is its historic Cherokee Hotel (1928).  A welcome respite for railroad travelers, many dignitaries passed through its doors. Even in the late 1950s, it hosted Hollywood’s cast and crew of Wild River. The hotel closed in mid 1960s and reopened as Cleveland Summit, home to Section 8 Housing residents. In light of Cleveland’s recent downtown revitalization efforts, senior interior design students were charged with investigating the possibility of converting the building to a hotel again with 2 floors of condominiums.

Pre-design investigations included site visits, site analysis, local history and demographic research, hotel programming, and building’s historic timeline. Consultation with mechanical, structural, architectural and landscape professionals helped develop solutions to resolve numerous code and accessibility issues presented by site and building. Schematic design pushed student teams to explore radical solutions to provide adequate parking and hotel amenities for a 3-4 star-rated hotel.

Three student teams presented creative solutions addressing function, aesthetics, and health safety and welfare issues. Documents provided include concept development, site analysis, floor plans, building sections, rendered interior and exterior views, and finish and furnishing selections. Well-developed, unique concepts were inspired directly from research on the area’s history:
